This claustrophobic picture (aka L’Apollonide Souvenirs de la maison close) is a frank, unexploitative account of life in a smart Parisian brothel in 1899 and 1900. It demonstrates that la belle époque was less belle for the girls than for their wealthy clients, though better than walking the streets or working in a sweatshop. The film is superbly designed to suggest the oppressive, hypocritical haut-bourgeois decor, the obsessive eroticism that excludes real desire, and the languorous timelessness that makes one day like another. There is enough detail about money, cosmetics, hygiene, sexually transmitted diseases, theatrical deportment and authentic camaraderie to qualify the film as a kind of documentary. But a final coda offering a glimpse of whores in present-day Paris, waiting in the streets for passing motorists to pick them up, shows that plus ça change, plus c’est le même commerce. The movie’s most startling image is of an abused, once beautiful prostitute who imagines her client’s sperm turning into tears and flowing from her eyes.
Some critics described it as sodding brilliant, others were less congratulatory. This new offering however, is not another Top Gear: The Movie, but rather Top Gear AT the Movies, where Mssrs Hammond and May present a film involving cars. On film. Its probably better than an actual real-life movie, with actors and everything. Though that largely depends on what movie youre comparing it to. It lacks the Heartwarming! drama of Titanic, and contains considerably less bitey alien action than Aliens.

Sometime in the future, the city of Metropolis is home to a Utopian society where its wealthy residents live a carefree life. One of those is Freder Fredersen. One day, he spots a beautiful woman with a group of children, she and the children who quickly disappear. Trying to follow her, he, oblivious to such, is horrified to find an underground world of workers, apparently who run the machinery which keeps the above ground Utopian world functioning. One of the few people above ground who knows about the world below is Freder’s father, Joh Fredersen, who is the founder and master of Metropolis. Freder learns that the woman is Maria, who espouses the need to join the “hands” – the workers – to the “head” – those in power above – by a mediator or the “heart”. Freder wants to help the plight of the workers in the want for a better life. But when Joh learns of what Maria is espousing and that Freder is joining their cause…
Doug (Rhys Darby) lives in the perfect no worry world but his life shatters when long term girlfriend Susan (Faye Smythe) dumps him. Though Doug discovers an injured duck and starts to nurse it better. This new found motivation propels Doug into a new journey in his life which causes him to fall in love with veterinarian Holly (Sally Hawkins). Though the path to love is never easy and just when you think you’ve got a handle on it, it takes flight. Susan comes back into his life, and Doug must learn a valuable lesson, lean on his friends and follow his heart.
